True Godliness

Posted on May 22, 2026 by Pam R

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.
After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world,
and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.
So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.
1 Timothy 6:6-8 NLT

***

“True godliness doesn’t turn men out of the world,
but enables them to live better in it,

and excites their endeavours to mend it …
Christians should keep the helm and guide the vessel to its port;
not meanly steal out at the stern of the world
and leave those that are in it without a pilot
to be driven by the fury of evil times upon the rock or sand of ruin.”

William Penn, 1682

***

“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better,
promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”
1 Timothy 4:8 NLT

***

To do evil that good may come of it is contrary to the doctrine of Christianity;
that when times are so cloudy that we cannot go forward
in the way of clearness and purity,
it behooves us in the depth of humility to wait on the Lord
to know his mind concerning us and our children.

John Woolman, 1720-1772

***

Oh Lord, may I be directed what to do and what to leave undone.
Elizabeth Fry

***

By his divine power,
God has given us everything we need for living a godly life.
We have received all of this by coming to know him,
the one who called us to himself by means of
his marvelous glory and excellence.
2 Peter 1:3 NLT

***

The likeness we bear to Jesus is more essential than our notions of him.
Lucretia Mott 1793-1880
