Outside our window, two dignified Canada geese sauntered past. Behind them, almost as an afterthought, stumbled one small, fluffy gosling. Just the one. Following the parents. Both parents. Who were raising their baby. Even though there was only the one.
My first thought was, “Those poor geese! Only one gosling! How discouraging!” But they didn’t seem discouraged. They looked to be committed to their task: doing their job, raising a baby to adulthood. Being faithful.
And then I wondered, when given a small, “insignificant” job, do I feel it is beneath me? Or do I take pride in doing all I can, as an assignment directly from God?
Work willingly at whatever you do,
as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
Colossians 3:23 NLT
Perhaps the Lord is taking my faithfulness temperature. Because,
“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones.
But if you are dishonest in little things,
you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.
Luke 16:10 NLT
Faithfulness knows no difference between small and great duties.
John Ruskin
Faithfulness in little things is a big thing.
Chrysostom
God rewards faithfulness and not the size of our ministries.

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!
You have been faithful with a few things;
I will put you in charge of many things.
Come and share your master’s happiness!’
