“I come broken to be mended
I come wounded to be healed
I come desperate to be rescued
I come empty to be filled
I come guilty to be pardoned
By the blood of Christ the Lamb
And I’m welcomed with open arms
Praise God, just as I am”
(This stanza is a bridge between verses of “Just As I Am,” as sung by Travis Cottrell.)
“I Come Wounded to be Healed…”
Broken things have sharp edges. Broken people do, too. Interactions can wound when your brokenness touches my vulnerability. And if that weren’t enough, we are masters at wounding ourselves! So what can be done?
We can pretend that “everything is okay,” denying the reality of the hurt. But Time does not necessarily heal all wounds, it often makes them worse. The best course always is to go to the Great Physician, because:
One of the first questions Jesus asked people was, “Do you want to be well?” (John 5:6) Truthfully? Not always. Sometimes our wounds define us and we don’t know who we are without them. Are we giving in to the pain or letting the person who hurt us off the hook? But,
Christ is the Great Physician, the source of healing:
But he was wounded for the wrong things we did.
He was crushed for the evil things we did.
The punishment, which made us well, was given to him.
And we are healed because of his wounds. Isaiah 53:5 International Children’s Bible
Then remember this:
That’s what Mother always said and it’s true. Once we’ve placed ourselves in God’s care, we need to let Him work. That means no more “pressing the bruise to see if it still hurts.” That only makes us worry that God is not acting on our behalf. Who needs that discouragement? Especially since it’s not true!
God doesn’t follow our timetable for healing. Sometimes the work seems slow because He knows that we are too fragile for a quicker process. Sometimes the work will only be finished in Heaven. He knows what is best and necessary: Trust Him. He has got you.
Stronger than before. Wiser than before. Happier than before. Closer to Him than before. Better than before.
And all of that that starts the moment you reach out to Him.
So remember, I am the Lord who heals you. Exodus 15:26
