White contains all the wavelengths of the visible spectrum at equal intensity. It is the presence of all the light.
White (or its variations), in the King James translation, occurs 79 times (81 times in the New Living Translation). It is the most frequently mentioned pigment in the New Testament and in the word of God as a whole.
White describes the appearance of God (Daniel 7:9 NLT), and of Jesus’s garments during His transfiguration (Matthew 17:2).
White is typically associated with things that are good, innocent and honest.
A garment that was white was considered to be the cleanest possible. (Not easy for people then – or now.)
God is the agent of cleansing and whiteness:
“Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
I will make them as white as snow.
Though they are red like crimson,
I will make them as white as wool.
Isaiah 1:18 NLT
All we have to do is ask.
Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Psalm 51:7 NLT
White is a blank sheet of paper, it’s a clean slate, a fresh start.
*********
All this to say, when God looks at us, He sees us clothed in the white of Jesus’s pure righteousness.
Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ
to be holy and without fault in his eyes. Ephesians 1:4 NLT
It is a gift:
But to all who believed him and accepted him,
he gave the right to become children of God.
John 1:12 NLT
So, no matter what you are wearing today, remember that as God’s chosen, you wear Christ’s righteousness. You are clothed, by God’s grace, in white.
Does that make a difference as you go about your day?
