“Zoey,” I said, “in a few minutes I am going to vacuum this room.”
From her position lounging on my bed, my cat just looked at me. I’m sure she understood, but she wasn’t moving.
Zoey has always had the notion that the vacuum cleaner, with all its noise, actively seeks to suck up cats. Nothing I can say will convince her otherwise. Hence the head’s up.
“Zoey, I’m getting ready to vacuum in here. You may want to leave.”
Still nothing. Oh, well. She was warned.
True to my word, I started cleaning, first in the bathroom, then moving to the bedroom. It wasn’t until I got close to the bed that Zoey finally fled from certain destruction.
With a smile, I finished my job.
**********
Afterwards, my daughter called me over. She had been sitting in the recliner with Hunter on her lap when Zoey shot out of the bedroom, and tucked herself as closely as she could next to Jenna’s leg. Apparently she was looking for a lap but, seeing Hunter, had settled for safe, full-body contact.
“Good girl, Zoey!” we praised her. “Seeking protection, and not just hiding is great progress. We are so glad you trust Jenna!” (There are good reasons why she didn’t trust me just then. I mean, vacuum!)
Now if only I can remember where my safety is!
The Lord is my Rock, my fortress, my place of safety.
He is my God, the Rock I run to for protection.
He is my shield; by his power I am saved.
He is my hiding place high in the hills.

I want to share this song with you. It says it all.
