My rabbit-proofed garden is growing nicely. Beautiful yellows and purples are visible from my kitchen sink. Such joy-givers.
But now there’s new dilemma. They took out the old dead juniper last fall, so this spring the landscaping committee asked what I wanted to plant in the empty space. One of the suggestions was Knock-Out roses. A little investigation told me that white Knock-Out roses have fragrance, so that’s what I asked for.
Exciting! Until I discovered that rabbits LOVE roses!
Darn.
What are my options?
Decline the rose? Really? A free rose?
Plant it elsewhere? But rabbits go everywhere.
Block the rabbit’s entrance? This feels mean. And where would they go? There are predators out there.
But if they aren’t living there anymore? A little test, and – yep, they still are.
What to do. What to do …
I make you trustees of My estate,
so care for My creation and rule over the fish of the sea,
the birds of the sky, and every creature that roams across the earth.”
Genesis 1:28b The Voice
The God who made both the rabbit and the rose has appointed me trustee over this little bit of earth. Surely there is an answer.
If you don’t have all the wisdom needed for this journey,
then all you have to do is ask God for it …
James 1:5a The Voice
So, I asked. The answer: a fence.
Not a big ugly fence, but a little rabbit-proofing fence – around the rose! Just the rose. I found one on Amazon. It comes today.
**********
Friday, two white Knock-Out roses appeared at my front door. Seems they were priced half-off, so I got two.
Into the ground they went. And I knew I’d made the right choice when, as I was watering them, a small rabbit ran out from under the lilac bush, straight to the still open entrance under the porch.
There is so much here, O Eternal One, so much You have made.
By the wise way in which You create, riches and creatures fill the earth.
I will sing to the Eternal all of my life;
I will call my God good as long as I live.
Psalm 104:24, 33 The Voice
