What CAN You Do?

Posted on March 20, 2020March 17, 2020 by Pam R

We all know what we can’t/shouldn’t do during this pandemic. Many of us are already not doing those things. But what can we do? Here are some thoughts I found online.

First, we can strengthen our own physical health with good nutrition and adequate sleep. Staying active, engaging in hobbies and reaching out (virtually) to loved ones all serve us both physically, and mentally. But we already know all this. So maybe it’s time to put our knowledge into practice. After all, the only thing truly in our control is our own behavior.

We can limit the time we spend tracking the news; that can be crazy-making. So many stories, so little time, so much unknown, so much hysteria. The Bible cautions us to think of what is true and lovely, things the media and the internet don’t typically provide.

We can enjoy nature. Green spaces are proven good for both mental and physical health. The outdoors is free and safe, as long as we keep a social distance from others – for their sake as well as our own. And spring is a such a delicious time to be outside.

We can plan and strategize as far as possible with all the unknowns. But when I find myself facing unexpected challenges, I remind myself, “If “____” happens, I will handle it. I’ll figure it out. I’ve done it before, I can do it again.” Sometimes, all we can do is reassure ourselves and let go of future worries, if only for the moment.

And most importantly, we can pray. Prayer reminds us that we are not alone, that God cares for us more than we do for ourselves.

The Bible says,

Before you do anything, put your trust totally in God and not in yourself. Then every plan you make will succeed.
Proverbs 16:3 The Passion Translation (TPT)

It goes on to say:

The Lord works everything together to accomplish his purpose.
Proverbs 16:4a The Passion Translation (TPT)

It’s true: He does work everything together. Coronavirus hasn’t taken God by surprise. Leaning into and onto Him is the one thing we can do that is likely to make the greatest difference, for ourselves and for others, until this crisis is over.

Because one day it will be over. So keep calm and carry on. You can do this. We can all do this – together.
