Outside my window are two hummingbird feeders. I love to see those exquisite birds perch and take their time. Do they feel safe as they drink the sugar-water? I smile every time they visit.
A week ago, I noticed a slender vine with arrowhead leaves climbing the shepherd’s hook. A google search suggests that this is bindweed, an invasive garden pest. But as it isn’t bothering anything where it is, I decided to let it be. After all, I’ve been letting all the other garden weeds be – all summer long!
Weeds have gotten some bad press:
There are some things that weeds do right:
“The difference between a flower and a weed is truly in the eye of the gardener.
A weed is defined as a wild plant that is growing where it is not wanted
and stealing nutrients from the desired flowers in the garden.
A flower takes time, requires specific growing and watering conditions,
where a weed can grow anywhere, under most conditions.
“Grow anywhere, under most conditions.” In other words, survive. No matter what life brings, survive. And not just survive, but thrive.
And not God’s idea, either. To all animals and all birds, everything that moves and breathes,
I give whatever grows out of the ground for food.” Genesis 1:30 The Message
“What is the difference between a wildflower and a weed?
Society’s judgment, that is all. From the bees’ perspective it is all the same.“
For the insects and creatures, what people see as a problem is a blessing.
Then God surveyed everything He had made, savoring its beauty and appreciating its goodness. Genesis 1:31 The Voice
God saw that everything was very good. Including weeds!
No life is without difficulties. No garden is without weeds.
C. L. Fornari
Maybe the “weeds” in my life aren’t punishment. Maybe there is a reason for difficulties! Maybe I should watch instead of complain. Because God is still creating:
We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan. Romans 8:28 The Voice
I’m going to let that little vine grow. It looks like it is will flower. That will please the birds. Pleasing the hummingbirds makes me smile.
All this thanks to a determined little weed that, obeying its nature, insists on growing.
Same as me.
