The First Prayer

Posted on April 27, 2020April 26, 2020 by Pam R

Two days later there was a wedding in the town of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine had given out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They are out of wine.”
4 “You must not tell me what to do,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”
5 Jesus’ mother then told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
John 2:1-5 Good News Translation (GNT)

The story of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana is famous. The focus is, of course, on Jesus. But what about Mary?

Mary, privy to the celebration details, spotted trouble: there was no more wine. Not enough bought or not enough money to spend on it? Either way, embarrassing and shameful.

Telling the family would ruining the party. And small towns have long memories for such failures.

But Jesus was there. So she gave Him her problem. No suggestions of what He might do, no announcement of Who He was. Asking and trusting, she prayed the first recorded prayer to the Messiah: “They are out of wine.”

Don’t worry about anything. No matter what happens, tell God about everything. Ask and pray, and give thanks to him. Philippians 4:6-7 New International Reader’s Version (NIRV)

No discussing, debating or pleading, either. Though it seems Jesus is denying her request, she leaves it in His hands, instructing the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.” Whatever. At His pleasure and in His time.

“Ask, and God will give to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will open for you.  Yes, everyone who asks will receive. Everyone who searches will find. And everyone who knocks will have the door opened. Matthew 7:7-8 New Century Version (NCV)

There is no evidence that anyone but Mary, the servants and the disciples knew what happened next. But clearly Mary knew something about prayer. And it is still true today:

*See the need. Any and every need.
*Bring it to the Lord and leave it there in faith.
*Then be ready for the answer. Because He has promised:

My God will richly fill your every need in a glorious way through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:18 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
