Springing Forward …

Posted on March 11, 2024 by Pam R

… into Daylight Savings time. I’ve heard that some people get up at 2 AM to change their clocks. But I’m not a fan of broken sleep. So, on Saturday, I fixed the clocks, went to bed and to sleep …

…. until the smoke alarm in my room went off at about 10:30. It sounded different: two loud beeps every minute. Jenna changed the batteries, but it kept beeping. We checked: no flames, smoke, heat anywhere, inside or out. We decided to just remove the batteries and wait until morning. That’s when the second smoke detector began to do the same thing. “Those things don’t lie,” was my first thought.

(You probably already see where this is going. But I’m not too logical when first awakened.)

One detector can be ignored, but two? I called 911. The fire department was on the way they said. Leave the building and don’t return until they get there, they said. The logistics of evacuating Hunter were beyond me (where was the carrier?), and part of me knew that there was no danger, but we went outside to wait. Hunter watched us from the window.

We waited and wondered what was taking so long. The firehouse wasn’t far away. And it was too cold for pajamas. Way, way too cold. I snuck back in for a coat and boots. (Don’t tell them.)

Thinking over what was happening, I mused aloud. “I think they are just old and need to be replaced.”

“The firemen?” Jenna wondered.

The engine finally arrived, lit up like Christmas. Six enormous men got out. (Okay, they were probably normal sized under that gear.)

They went in, checked everything. Verdict: old smoke detectors that need replacing. Tomorrow will be soon enough. Then they left. Nice guys. It could have been worse. It wasn’t.

Too awake to sleep, I went shopping online for two new smoke/CO2 detectors. Nearby stores were out of the talking kind I want. So, I ended up on Amazon. They will come Monday. I think that’s okay.

I’m sure it’s okay. Because as I was finally falling asleep this verse came to mind:

In peace I will lie down and sleep,
    for you alone, Lord,
    make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8 NIV

**********

Sunday morning, I woke at 7 AM to the sound of chirping … birds in the bush outside my window.

God is good. All day and all night long, God is good.
