But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.
Keep your servant also from willful sins;
may they not rule over me. Psalm 19:12-13 NIV
Drawer and closet cleaning can be such fun! What memories they store. I belong to a family of “pack rats,” the ones who hate to throw anything away. But I discovered early on that by discarding what is useless or unused can make the whole house seem larger and more spacious.
So goodbye, wedding dress: you no longer fit. Somewhere there’s someone who needs you. And goodbye, Pac Man lunchbox: the child who used you is now grown. And goodbye, fancy buffet serving ware: we aren’t that elegant in our entertaining and you take up too much room. And so on and so on…
There! Look how much space we have now!

Lord, I have a lot of excess baggage in my soul, too. Habits and activities that take up so much time and energy and don’t leave me room to do more important things. I see now that I am addicted to some of the world’s pleasures: to television, to games, to books. Lord, none of these are bad, but they take up space. Help me to limit my consumption, to clear my closet, so that I have time for the better things: time for others and for You.
