A particularly senseless questions we sometimes ask each other is this: “Which of your 5 senses would you give up?”
Vision? No sunsets, rainbows, smiles on well-loved faces?
No, not vision.
Hearing? No laughter, music, birdsong?
No, not hearing.
Smell? No flowers, fresh bread, scented candles?
No, not smell.
Taste? No chocolate, pumpkin pie, coffee?
No, not taste.
Touch? No warm sunshine on my face, fuzzy socks, soft cat fur?
No, not touch.
God has filled this world with beauty. We were created to experience that beauty, especially through our senses. How ungrateful it seems to think of discarding any of those amazing gifts!
In fact, everything about us is amazing – even the parts that no longer work so well.
I thank you, God, for making me so mysteriously complex!
Everything you do is marvelously breathtaking.
It simply amazes me to think about it!
How thoroughly you know me, Lord! Psalm 139:14 The Passion Translation
“I’ve started to look at life differently.
When you’re thanking God for [everything] – every meal, every time you wake up,
every time you take a sip of water – you can’t help but be more thankful for life itself,
for the unlikely and miraculous fact that you exist at all.”
A. J. Jacobs
So, thank God for taste …
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
for he satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things. Psalm 107: 8-9 NIV
… and smell …
Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart. Proverbs 27:9a NIV
… and hearing and vision …
Ears to hear and eyes to see—
both are gifts from the Lord. Proverbs 20:12 New Living Translation
… and all the other blessings He has given us.
Come and see what God has done,
his awesome deeds for mankind! Psalm 66:5 NIV
“To be grateful is to recognize the love of God in everything He has given us — and He has given us everything.
Every breath we draw is a gift of His love, every moment of existence is a grace,
for it brings with it immense graces from Him.”
Thomas Merton
I will sing to the Lord because he has blessed me so richly. Psalm 13:6 TLB
It just makes sense.
