We live in increasingly uncertain times. With threatening climate change and a global pandemic that just keeps going and going, the temptation is to focus on fears and worries in a state of hyper-alertness. Add to that the many deep social divides that threaten to tear our country apart. It feels like a perfect storm.
And yet …
If we say we trust God, if we say we are His children, perhaps our energies would be better spent reaffirming Who He is and who we are in relation to Him. Psalm 18 gives us glimpses of the God we love and serve.
From Psalm 18 New Living Translation
1 I love you, Lord;
you are my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
and my place of safety.
3 I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and he saved me from my enemies.
16 He reached down from heaven and rescued me;
he drew me out of deep waters.
19 He led me to a place of safety;
he rescued me because he delights in me.
28 You light a lamp for me.
The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.
30 God’s way is perfect.
All the Lord’s promises prove true.
He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.
31 For who is God except the Lord?
Who but our God is a solid rock?
32 God arms me with strength,
and he makes my way perfect.
36 You have made a wide path for my feet
to keep them from slipping.
46 The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock!
May the God of my salvation be exalted!
Father God,
I know it is normal for us to sometimes find ourselves
in a pit of fear and discouragement.
But we don’t have to stay there.
Today, we’re choosing to fix our eyes on You.
And we’re remembering that each thing we verbalize our thankfulness for
is like a stepping stone out of the pit we’ve been in.
Thank You for providing Your timeless truths that prove to us over and over again
how powerfully capable You always are. With You by our side, we have no need to fear.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
