v 15-16: Paul calls for reasonable agreement to his teachings. God himself can and will change minds caught in error, but each of us is responsible to live according to what we already understand. What we don’t know doesn’t excuse us from failing to obey what we do know.
v 17: We are not only to live by Paul’s (and Christ’s) example, we are to identify those others who also do so. In this way we strengthen each other.
v 18-19: With great sorrow Paul admits that many “church people” live lives against his teachings. They never see beyond their own needs, desires, possessions. Nor do they want to. They are focused wholly on themselves and the present.
v 20-21: Those who follow Christ think beyond the present toward a heavenly future. And they look with full assurance of a complete perfection of soul, mind and body.
Lord, I know I don’t live up to what I know. Knowing is easy; doing is hard. I would like to be someone who is a good example of faith. But please, don’t let this be about me and my self, but about You. You alone offer the only future worth having. Keep me focused on that. I love You. Amen.
