This passage is considered by some scholars to be an early church hymn.
v 5: Paul continues the theme of practical unity by citing Jesus’ example. We have been given the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16); we are to use it as He does. Paul goes on to explain what that means.
v 6: Christ was in all ways God, but did not insist on His rights. We are asked to choose his example of humility as our default with each other instead of clinging to our “privileges.”
v 7-8: He willingly accepted the limitations imposed by human form and became servant both to the Father and to the creatures he himself had made. And He held nothing back. His humility and obedience extended to one of the most cruel deaths ever devised by evil.
v 9-11: Because Christ held nothing back in his obedience, God the Father held nothing back, giving Him the highest place, and the highest name. That Name will receive universal homage, not just from angels (in heaven) and mortal beings (on earth), but from demons (under the earth), and universal confession that Jesus is Lord. And God the Father will glorified.
Lord, I get side-tracked and confused when I measure myself against others. But when You are my yardstick, things become very clear. I have no cause to boast or demand, no self-righteousness, or conceit. You Who were God were none of these, and I have no reason for anything but humility. Please daily renew Your mind in me so I can see You, and others, with Your true vision. Amen
