Friendship with God is reserved for those who reverence him. With them alone he shares the secrets of his promises. Psalm 25:14 The Living Bible (TLB)
Missy had ignored me all morning, preferring to spend her time in her own way.
But now it was noon, and time for lunch. And lunchtime was one of her favorite things. That is, my lunch was one of her favorite things.
As I sat with my sandwich, she made her way onto the table to see what I had, Ah! It was ham, one of her passions.
Gently, I reminded her that cats do not eat pig in the wild. She did not care. Domestic cats ate pig whenever possible, she assured me. Besides, she said, cats do not eat cat food in the wild, either. I had to admit that she had a point.
Purring, she watched each bite I took, occasionally leaning in for a sniff. Smiling, I offered her a small bite. Graciously she took it. And came back for more.
The pattern was now set. We would share. She took it for granted that whatever I had she would get a part of. What was mine was hers. She could live with that. So could I.
When the meal was over, though, it was back to solitary cat pursuits. Oh, well, I thought. I know I can always get her attention by making a sandwich.
And do I seek the Lord above
With equal case of “cupboard love,”
Pursuing my own “want” and “need”,
Intent upon His grace to feed?
Still, in a way it’s good to know
That He receives me even so.
But better far ‘twould be for me
To come to Him less selfishly.
To come to Him with no requests,
Or private listing of behests.
To simply seek His company
Without a thought of aught for me.
