In Case of Emergency …

Posted on June 11, 2025 by Pam R

The ship docked in Mexico on the second day. Amy had signed up to ride horseback, but I had something else in mind. After a room service breakfast, I took a leisurely shower, dressed and headed out with my trusty cane to find a quiet deck chair and enjoy the view. No overdoing it for me!

I was in for a treat, though. While passengers were ashore, the crew of the Disney Wonder held a life-boat drill. And I had a front row seat!

Before we sailed, all passengers had to participate in an assembly drill to comply with U.S. Coast Guard and international safety regulations. We mustered at our assigned location and learned to recognize the emergency whistle (seven short blasts then one long blast). Upon hearing it parents were collect their children, everyone was to go to their cabin for warm clothes and shoes, and report to the assigned location. Seemed like a lot to do in an emergency.

As I lounged in my chair, they announced a drill. Then the emergency blasts sounded, and crew members moved to their assigned stations. I saw every kind of uniform, including those who apparently worked in the kitchen. A few made eye contact with me and smiled. Most were focused on the task at hand.

It seemed a very long time of waiting for the crew. I guess it was time built in so the passengers could accomplish their tasks and get to their location. I imagine it took time to ready the lifeboats, too. But finally, the announcement came with one long blast of the whistle: “Abandon Ship!”

We didn’t, of course. The drill was completed for the starboard side of the ship. On the port side, I saw the lifeboats having their turn: being swung out, lowered slightly, then tucked back in their place.

I’m told that this drill is performed every 2 weeks. I’m glad they prepare and are ready, but ultimate safety doesn’t lie in their hands.

My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth!
Psalm 121:2 NLT
