Our Daily Bread
Bread has historically been a diet staple world-wide. It is featured in religious rituals and secular culture and in the Bible, where God supplied bread, Manna, in the wilderness:
So the people of Israel went out and gathered it—some getting more and some less before it melted on the ground, and there was just enough for everyone. Exodus 16:17 Living Bible (TLB)
“Just enough for everyone.” What a picture of Grace!
Centuries later, Jesus instructed his disciples to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread,” and trust that God would meet our needs.
I pray this and believe it. But sometimes I find myself worrying that I won’t have enough food if the lock-down continues for months as predicted. I start thinking I need to get more now, before it’s all gone!
It’s true: there isn’t enough – right now – if the crisis goes on for months. But there is plenty – right now – for today, tomorrow, this week and next.
Truth is, I think, if God just gave us our daily bread, many of us would be angry. ‘That’s all you’re going to give me? You’re just going to give me enough to sustain me for today? What about tomorrow or next year or 10, 20, 30 years from now? I want to know that I’m set up.’ And yet Jesus says just pray for your daily provisions. Francis Chan
Jesus also says, And don’t worry about food—what to eat and drink; don’t worry at all that God will provide it for you. All mankind scratches for its daily bread, but your heavenly Father knows your needs. He will always give you all you need from day to day if you will make the Kingdom of God your primary concern. Luke 12:29-31 Living Bible (TLB)
A daily portion is really all we need. We do not need tomorrow’s supply, for that day has not yet dawned, and its needs are still unborn. Charles Spurgeon
Grace knows our needs. Grace supplies our needs. Every day, every moment, His Grace is enough.
Grace is available for each of us every day – our spiritual daily bread – but we’ve got to remember to ask for it with a grateful heart
and not worry about whether there will be enough for tomorrow. Sarah Ban Breathnach
Because, right now, in this uncertain time, His Grace is all we need.
