The people who walk in darkness
will see a great light.
For those who live in a land of deep darkness,
a light will shine.

The more a nation gets into darkness, the more it’s going to hate the light.
The more it’s going to run from the light.
And we have a generation of people who have given themselves to darkness, …
because it gets them away from moral responsibility to God.

Holy God,
“when the earth was without shape or form,
it was dark over the deep sea,” yet You were there.
Even amidst the darkness in the world now, I trust that again, You are there,
preparing once more to intervene with Your creative power.
In some instances, I find it easier to call out the darkness that exists:
when your beloved children are dismissed and marginalized;
when I sheepishly neglect to stand up for the least of these;
when fear of the other seems to win the day.
I cannot always separate the light from the darkness in the world,
for like at dawn and dusk, the powers of light and darkness often meet,
mixing and mingling in systems, in structures, in my enemies, in myself.
Grant me the humility to allow your light to shine through the cracks in my life.
Shine through the broken places in our churches, our nation, and in our world,
so that all may be healed.
In the name of Jesus, the true light of the world,
Amen.

For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,”
has made this light shine in our hearts
so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

Hope is being able to see that there is light
despite all of the darkness.
