The hummingbirds are preparing to migrate long distances for the winter. By the middle of October they will be gone. As they fill up for their journey, I noticed something.
Hummingbirds have two approaches to feeding. Some perch on the feeders, drinking with concentration. They tend to stay for more than a minute.
Then there are hummingbirds that, for whatever reason, refuse to perch. They drink as they hover over the feeder and leave quickly after a few seconds. I don’t know why there is this difference. Do some feel safe while others don’t?

I think that people can be like that, too. There are those who spend time drinking deeply from Your truth, eager for more and more. They are still as they “tank up,” before they go about their business. A lot of us have been taught that this is the way it should be, the way it must be.
Then there are people who take their faith in small sips while keeping their engines running. Is that the way they are programed? Are things in their lives demanding their fullest attention? Or maybe they find it easier to digest God’s truth in small bites.
Lord, I have been both those types at different times. Neither is wrong or “better,” no matter what we’ve been told. The important thing is that we come to You for nourishment. Your Living Water is as free to us as the sugar-water in the feeder is to the birds. So I accept Your invitation, and gratefully thank You. Amen
