Faith Defined

Posted on December 7, 2020December 6, 2020 by Pam R

What is faith? It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we cannot see it up ahead. Hebrews 11:1-2 Living Bible

Webster’s New World College Dictionary defines faith as “unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence; unquestioning belief in God.”  In the Bible, “faith” means believing in God, and in what Christ has done for us to make our salvation possible – and then committing ourselves to Him.

Faith is deliberate confidence in the character of God
whose ways you cannot understand at the time.
Oswald Chambers

There are two parts to faith. First there is belief that God exists, and that He loves us and sent His Son into the world to save us. Faith isn’t a vague hope that God might exist; it is a definite belief that what the Bible says about Him is true.

The man who approaches God must have faith in two things, first that God exists and secondly that it is worth a man’s while to try to find God.
Hebrews 11:5-7 J.B. Phillips New Testament

Faith is a kind of knowing; it is different from hope.
My faith is that life is purposeful; of that I’m sure.

There is a God, there is intelligence, there is consciousness.
And behind all of this, there is incredible compassion.
John Denver

Then there must be a decision beyond believing that Christ can save us, but trusting that He will, because He has promised to, and to act on that belief.

Then they would put their trust in God.
They would not forget what he had done.
    They would obey his commands.

Psalm 78:7 New International Reader’s Version

Trusting because you remember His actions, and obeying because you trust the One Who acts, that is faith.

Faith isn’t the ability to believe long and far into the misty future.
It’s simply taking God at His Word and taking the next step.
Joni Eareckson Tada
