The Quakers have a tradition called “Centering,” also known as “Palms up, palms down.” It is similar to the steps I posted on Saturday, consisting of Release, Receive and Rest.
PREPARE
*Sit comfortably, with your hands resting on your lap.
*Gently notice your breathing as you become still.
RELEASE YOUR BURDENS
*Turn your palms down and allow yourself to recognize what you are carrying today: concerns, anxieties, or things that weigh on you. Notice what you are feeling at the moment.
*Let your downward palms symbolize your releasing these concerns to God.
Allow yourself to release the emotions you have struggled all your life to contain.
Ellen Bass
*Pause for as long as you need before moving on to the next step.
RECEIVE GOD’S GRACE
*When you feel ready to move on, turn your palms up as a symbol of your desire to receive. Articulate that (with or without words) to the One who loves to give generously.
*Continue to sit with you palms up and listen for what God’s wants to give freely to you.
This posture shows that you are open to receiving whatever it is that God is giving you at this moment.
Receive without conceit, release without struggle.
Marcus Aurelius
*Take as long as you need before moving on.
REST IN HIS PRESENCE
Relax your posture. You need only to sit quietly. You are in God’s presence. You are a child of God. God loves you. Treasure this time with God. Sit in silence for as long as the Spirit moves you.
Rest.
It’s part of the process.
