While taming our to-do list is a good first step, the truth is that stress comes anyway. There is no way we can live up to the subtle expectations that bombard us from inside and out on a daily basis. But there are ways to catch and deal with stress before it overwhelms. These are some practices for staying connected with ourselves and with God.
Connecting with My Self
What we think, feel or experience affects our body. How we treat our physical body (exercise, relaxation, etc.) affects our attitudes and thoughts. A practical way to become aware of our emotions and thoughts or control stress is through DEEP BREATHING techniques:
1. Breathe in deeply through the nose for 6 counts, expanding the “balloon” under the navel as much as possible.
2. Hold the breath for 3 counts.
3. Exhale through the mouth, deflating the “balloon” completely.
4. Repeat as needed.
This is a great way to “control” your tension when you are feeling “hurried” and “harried.”
Connecting with God
