Temptation is a desire to engage in short-term urges for enjoyment that threatens long-term goals.
***********
“Every temptation comes down to this one fundamental temptation:
It is the temptation to believe that the satisfaction
of the deepest desires of our hearts is totally up to us.”
Christopher West
No temptation has come your way that is too hard for flesh and blood to bear. But God can be trusted not to allow you to suffer any temptation beyond your powers of endurance. He will see to it that every temptation has a way out, so that it will never be impossible for you to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 Phillips
“We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it:
and Christ, because he was the only man who never yielded to temptation,
is also the only man who knows to the full what temptation means.”
C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
For because He Himself [in His humanity] has suffered in being tempted (tested and tried), He is able [immediately] to run to the cry of (assist, relieve) those who are being tempted and tested and tried [and who therefore are being exposed to suffering]. Hebrews 2:18 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
“You will not experience dramatic change in your struggle
as long as you use accountability to describe your sins
instead of declaring your need for help in the midst of temptation.”
Heath Lambert, Finally Free: Fighting for Purity with the Power of Grace
Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help. Hebrews 4:14-16 The Message
“Take the mercy, accept the help.”
Because it is there.
