Tomorrow is . . .

NATIONAL READ A BOOK DAY

(Some of the following was gleaned from the web)

Scientists have discovered how to maintain clarity of mind throughout life: you need to constantly develop your brain. One of the best ways to do this is to read regularly and thoughtfully. Reading improves memory and concentration as well as reduces stress.   Older adults who spend time reading show a slower cognitive decline and tend to participate in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetime.  Books are inexpensive entertainment, education and time machines, too!

National Read A Book Day is observed annually on September 6th, inviting us all to grab a book we might enjoy and spend the day reading, because:

  • It’s the best excuse for peace and quiet.
  • Books are on your schedule: you can pick them up and put them down at your own convenience.
  • You’re going through something and you just need to get lost in a beautiful, made-up world.
  • You haven’t gotten to use your imagination in a really long time.
  • Today’s world is loud, hyper-connected and busy.
  • The world inside your head is yours and yours alone.

Yes, it is on a Friday. Yes, many of us have to work. No, most of us can’t spend the whole day reading, as lovely as that may sound. But we can all make a start. And there are so many options: fiction, non-fiction, biography, travel, or mystery; available in hardcover, paperback, e-book, online book, audiobook (They should count, too: they go quite well paired with mindless household chores).

Have fun with this. And if you have a chance, comment on the book(s) you like. I’m always looking for my next good read.

Tomorrow I will share a recent reading adventure.
