There is conflict in the yard. The bees are feeding, as best they can, from the hummingbird feeders. They are not very successful: the feeders weren’t made for them.
Meanwhile, the hummingbirds are battling back for their sugar-water. I watched one hummer poke a bee with it’s bill to get it out of the way. I watched a different bee chase another bird away. With both species tanking up, the bees for hibernation, the birds for migration, it has become almost comical. But the bees outnumber the birds. I feel sorry for the hummingbirds; it is, after all, their food.
The sad thing is that the bees, in their urgency, often crawl into the feeders and drown in the syrup. I find some dead – and some barely alive – when I clean and refill them. But the battle commences as soon as I put the feeders back out.
What a crazy world! Even the birds and the bees can’t get along!
**********
All creatures depend on you to give them their food when they need it.
When you give it to them, they eat it.
When you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things.
Psalm 104:27-28 New International Reader’s Version
Lord, this is a battle. The hummingbirds and bees know a food-source when they see it; but there is plenty for all. There is no need to quarrel. Yet quarrel they do.
Oh, Lord, You have provided for my needs, too. Yet fear that there will not be enough leads me to worry, and worse. I forget that You have promised to supply what I need when I need it, that You promise me good things.
I don’t want to forget Whose open hand makes those good things available. I want to be satisfied with Your generosity.
And, I want to say “Thank You.” I do have more than enough. I have plenty. Amen.
To know when you have enough is to be rich beyond measure.
