Please read these verses in your own Bible or online (Bible Gateway: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians+1%3A+7-11&version=NIV The notes are from my studies.
v 7-8 Financial support, prayer support, friendship, fellow sharers of God’s grace. There is a special relationship between these Christians and Paul. Paul is not alone, whether imprisoned or on trial, for the Philippians share it with him through God’s grace. And Paul loved and yearned over them in the same way Christ Jesus does.
(Do I have this kind of relationship with anyone? Lord, only Your love is strong enough and long enough. Teach me to be this kind of friend. Amen)
v 9 There is a sequence here: Paul’s prayer for this church combines an ever increasing love coupled with knowledge and deep insight. These are complementary: a better understanding of someone (the Lord or another person) will lead to greater love. And greater love will lead to a desire for even better understanding.
v 10 This love and wisdom lead to discernment: the ability to distinguish good from bad. This discernment, applied to one’s own life, brings about purity (inner righteousness) and blamelessness (sincerity, the outer righteousness that is visible to others).
v 11 All of this is a result of abiding in Jesus (John 15) When our life is ordered by His love, knowledge, insight, discernment and purity, we cannot help but produce the fruit of righteousness. And this glorifies God.
(Lord, I want to produce this kind of fruit. Give me the patience to abide and let You work Your changes in me. I love You. Amen.)
