In the Messiah, in Christ, God leads us from place to place in one perpetual victory parade. Through us, he brings knowledge of Christ. Everywhere we go, people breathe in the exquisite fragrance. Because of Christ, we give off a sweet scent rising to God, which is recognized by those on the way of salvation—an aroma redolent with life. 2 Corinthians 2: 14-16a
There is a skunk in the neighborhood. I have no idea where he could be living here in sprawling suburbia, but for the last several nights we have sensed his presence. It’s hard to have to close all the windows on a cool summer night, but this intruder makes it absolutely necessary.
I remember last spring, when the air was perfumed by lily-of-the-valley. What a joy it was to be in the yard! Even on a day when everything was going wrong, the scent would lighten and bless my soul.

Lord, how often in my life have I “come on too strong,” and repelled those around me? I don’t want to be like the skunk, with the foul smell of pride and self. Let me rather be like the lily, modest and sweet, drawing others with the fragrance of my Lord. Amen.
