“I Go to the Rock”

Posted on May 27, 2020May 26, 2020 by Pam R

Yesterday I included the YouTube video of a song that really raises my spirits (and keeps playing in my head!). You may be familiar with the references, or you may not be. In any case, here are some insights into the song, with links to specific Bible verses.

Where do I go when there’s nobody else to turn to?
Who do I talk to when nobody wants to listen?
Who do I lean on when there’s no foundation stable?
I go to the rock
I know he’s able
I go to the rock

I go to the rock for my salvation,

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Psalm 95:1 New International Version (NIV)

I go to the stone that the builders rejected,

The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
Psalm 118:22-23 New International Version (NIV)

Jesus quotes this verse (Matthew 21:42) in reference to Himself.

I run to the mountain and the mountain stands by me,

Mountains, which are considered closer to God, Who dwells in the heavens, are mentioned more than 500 times in the Bible. God reveals Himself on mountains on Mt. Sinai and Mt. Zion (aka “The City of David,” it is now the old section of Jerusalem). The Transfiguration took place on Mt. Tabor.

When the Earth all around me is sinking sand
On Christ, the solid rock I stand,

Luke 6: 46-49 The Wise and Foolish Builders.

When I need a shelter, when I need a friend
I go to the rock

Where do I go when the storms of life are threatening?
Who do I turn to when those winds of sorrow blow?
And is there a refuge in the time of tribulation?

Many of this song’s themes are echoed in Gospel songs, too. But ultimately, they are all from God’s Word, the Bible, and they are spoken to us in good times and bad. Take comfort, then: our God is in control.

“Every word of God is flawless;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Proverbs 30:5 New International Version (NIV)
