These days I’m doing something I swore I’d never do (Yeah, I know: we all are). After years of insisting that I wanted to pick out my own produce, I am ordering groceries online.
There are things I like about this process. I like having the opportunity to add to my list up until the pick-up day; we forget far fewer necessities this way. I like that it feels safer to wait outside in my car rather than going inside where there are so many unknowns. (How can we know what is safe to touch and who is safe to be near? Answer: we can’t know.) There is also the fact that if the store is out of something I want, they can substitute equal or better items at the same price. Not always, of course, but often. And I can work far enough ahead so that if I don’t get something one week, I can try again the next. Actually, I can’t see a downside.
This last week, Jenna and I were waiting in the car for our order to be brought out. I was enjoying the sunshine and idly watching the folks going in and out of the building. I was marveling at how many different styles and colors of mask there were, amused at how some people wore them, when suddenly I sat up in shock.
“Jenna, look!” I said. “That woman has toilet paper!“
And now I was laser-focused. Each time someone exited the store I checked out their cart, through the windshield, of course. And each time I saw toilet paper I gleefully noted it. A lot of people had some. Toilet paper was on my list, too. Was today my lucky day?
Well, as far as toilet paper goes, it was. I scored a huge package of Charmin. Woohoo! Who says you can’t buy happiness?
