The Birds & the Bees

Posted on August 17, 2026 by Pam R

The bees swarm around the hummingbird feeders, trying to get to the sugar-water. And that’s a problem. The sugar-water is not meant for them. The holes in the feeders are purposely too small for bees to get through.

But if they manage to squeeze through, they can’t get out again. They drown. Which spoils it for the hummingbirds. Poor bees. They didn’t see the danger in the “easy way.” They didn’t know the easy way leads to death, not life.

I too incline toward easy. It’s good enough, I tell myself. But is it? By grabbing easy, I don’t stretch. I limit my reach. And I grow lazy and self-satisfied.

***

There is the easy way, and there is the right way.

“Go in by the narrow gate.
For the wide gate has a broad road which leads to disaster
and there are many people going that way.
The narrow gate and the hard road lead out into life and only a few are finding it.”
Matthew 7:13-14 J.B. Phillips New Testament

***

Take those road hazards-
the potholes, ruts, detours, and all the rest-
as evidence that you were on the right route.
It’s when you find yourself on that big, broad,
easy road that you ought to worry.

Joni Eareckson Tada

***

I can do better; I can take the right way.

***

“Don’t look for shortcuts to God.
The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life
that can be practiced in your spare time.
Don’t fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do.
The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention.
Matthew 7:13-14 The Message
