Some of you may remember that 14 months ago our cat Zoey became very sick and was hospitalized for 3 days. The diagnosis was kidney disease, a common problem in cats. You may remember that I came very close to euthanizing her at that time, horrified by her pain and overwhelmed by the treatment I might have to give her, as well as the cost. Many of you reached out and cautioned me to be patient. You were right.
We had both cats to the vet this last week. Zoey was feisty enough to fight off 4 people who were trying to take blood. After a dose of calming medicine, they were finally able to get the draw. And the results were unexpected.
Zoey and Hunter are both completely healthy. The vet is now thinking that last year’s issue was a toxic episode (she may have been chewing on some dryer sheets that she had to climb up a stepstool to get to. They are now beyond her reach). Revised diagnosis: acute kidney disease. While we will keep them on the kidney diet, no other special care is required. They don’t even have to see the vet for a year, even though they are “senior citizens.”
Although this is a small thing as miracles go, it is very significant for me just now. In the middle of my own health issues (an annoying and lingering Chronic Fatique crash), I felt totally unable to cope with a sick cat. So while this is not the “main” dish of my Thanksgiving, it is a significant, and pleasant, “side.” All praise to the One who prepared this table before me. And thanks to those of you who talked me off the ledge last year.
Happy Thanksgiving! Let’s have pie!
