Doubt is not necessarily the end of real faith, but often the beginning.

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified.
“It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat,
walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and,
beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.
“You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying,
“Truly you are the Son of God.”
Matthew 14:25-33 NIV

All the disciples doubted it was Jesus.
But, in faith, Peter got out of the boat (note that he was the only one who did!) and began walking. On the water! Just like Jesus!
If you want Jesus to teach you to walk by faith,
be prepared for Him to ask you to step out of the boat.

Doubt, of whatever kind, can be ended by action alone.
Thomas Carlyle
Peter doubted again when he saw the wind and the waves.
But in faith he cried, “Lord, save me!”
Jesus immediately saved him.
“Who among us has not experienced insecurity,
loss and even doubts on their journey of faith? …
We’ve all experienced this, me too.”
Pope Francis
Doubting does not prove that a man has no faith,
but only that his faith is small.
And even when our faith is small,
the Lord is ready to help us.
J. C. Ryle
So, who was Peter doubting?
The One who walked on water and called him to do likewise?
Or his own ability to do so?
Because, in his own human ability, he couldn’t.
But in obedience to the Master, he could.
He could, because Jesus said he could.
“The Enemy is great at sowing seeds of doubt,
at working to undermine your confidence
about what God says is true about you.”
